In Toni Morrison’s Noble Lecture, Toni Morrison uses a bird in someone’s hand to compare two peoples point-of-view. When the old lady is asked the question, “Is the bird in my hand alive or dead?” I believe that they are really asking her whether the language between them is alive or dead. She shows that two people can have two completely different POVs on something that can be as simple as that. However in the speech this is Water by David Wallace, the comparison of water to a fish is compared to the “day in and day out” of everyday life to an adult. At the beginning the fish are asking “What the hell is water?” but by the end of the speech he has explains that the “water” of everyday life is only how you view it. We center our lives on ourselves. If we were to take a different POV to a specific situation we would see our lives in a whole different light. Both speeches are alike in that they are really trying to push the point across that everyone’s point-of-view to a specific situation is very different. On the other hand, the speeches differ as to the point-of-view the story is being told. In Toni Morrison’s speech the speech is in third person as the old, blind, women; and in this is Water the speech is told in first person as the person is going through everyday life.
