David Foster Wallace essay, “This
is Water”, was originally his commencement speech he gave back in 2005 when
graduating from Kenyon college. His direct audience at the time were his fellow
alumni, but can be extended to everyone. He keeps his speech simple and easy interpret.
His goal is not to challenge his peers but catch their attention. He thinks it’s
important that they “live” every day and don’t succumb to mindless routine. He constantly
assures his audience that he doesn’t wish to lecture nor preach to them. His
only goal is to express what living real is.
Toni
Morrison speech, like Wallace, was given at an accomplishing moment of her
life. Being rewarded for her intellect and creativity she delivers a unique and
memorable speech. In her meaningful yet hard to interpret speech she remind the
audience why she deserves a reward as prestige as the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Unlike Wallace she wishes to challenge her audience through her distinctive writing
style. She switch back and forth between speakers with no due warning which
leads to confusion until you come to the end and things become clearer. This allows
for each individual to come to their own interpretation of the story. Giving a
more personal touch to the speech.
