Comparing and Contrasting Joyas Voladors & "To Fall in Love..."

In both essays there were similar topics that were discussed in the plot although the two authors differed in the way they delivered it to their audience and how the author wrote their general essays. In the first reading “To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This” the author does a very much trial and error approach. Right from the beginning she clues in the audience to let them know about the experiment that will make up for most of the essay. Her writing and technique is clear to the reader by the use of her short sentences, clear language, and storytelling technique.  “I first read about the study when I was in the midst of a breakup. Each time I thought of leaving, my heart overruled my brain. I felt stuck. So, like a good academic, I turned to science, hoping there was a way to love smarter.” Says Carton. This is a clear understanding by the reader as to what she is trying to say. Now from the essay Joyas Voladroras , the author ,Doyle, has a different approach unlike Carton. Doyle is very poetic and lyrical his whole entire essay is a metaphor. His sentence structure is short but its parallelism. In the beginning he uses , “A humming bird’s heart…” to start off his sentences in order to tie it in metaphorically to the “jewel flyers”. Now both of these authors do convey the same message in a sense that love is connected through the heart and that we must go through the experiences that make our hearts beat faster or make us fall in love.

  1. Comaparing the article with the essay i can see one very distinct difference right off the back in the style they use in Catron's article it describes more the process of what they do i the experiment and how she applied the technique to her real life and how well it worked. While in Joyas Valodoras he talks more about the emotion and effort that goes into every heart beat and what it takes away everytime it pumps. To go along with that Catron's artical is more analytical than Joyas Valadoras and connects more to the artical to explain and give some kind of background on the experiment. While Joyas Valadoras is more free form and has more of a poetry rythm with it and just expresses more emotion as it goes on.

  2. To me, throughout the entirety of both essays, there is a very tightened sense of uncertainty. Much like you said, the author of Joyas Valadoras tried to explain love using metaphor. I think the reason for the author using metaphors in this way is because he wants to show that he himself is still uncertain about love and that the simplest way to explain it to a scientifically-oriented mind is to use concrete examples like the hearts of hummingbirds and blue whales. Similarly, the author of "To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This" attempted to explain love by describing how an old scientific study helped two strangers fall in love, along with herself and her partner. It is as if both of the authors of these articles are searching for some sort of answer or key to unlocking what we all know as love. One author claims it is a choice, while the other states the possibility of love coming from fear. The singular commonality however, is that they are inherently confused and searching for an answer.
