logos, pathos, and ethos

Logos, Pathos, and Ethos are all strategies that can be used in writing in order to grab the readers attention and or leave them with an impression, but also to make their writing unique. In "Strangers" by Toni Morrison, he uses Pathos in order to make the reader sympathize with his encounter and allow the reader to feel his disappoint and anger towards the fisherwoman. Morrison begins with describing his encounter and stating it is, "a friendship, casual, effortless, delightful" he uses an optimistic word choice to allow the readers to know that this encounter meant a lot to him and left an impression on him, which was a good one. Later he comes to find out that this stranger had fibbed about her intentions and then goes on to say "I feel cheated, puzzled...Now she is gone, taking with her my good opinion of myself, which, of course, is unforgiveable." His word choices then become pessimistic and show anger and disappointment. Allowing the readers to then feel sympathy for the person and wonder what could make a person do this to someone. Morrison uses his word choice in order to give the readers emotion towards the situation.
In the video "Love-You're Doing It Wrong", the narrator, Yann Dall'Aglio uses Ethos to establish the readers attention. He clearly states his credentials and therefore allows us to know he knows what he is talking about. He describes how he fits into the situation and the way he feels towards to it, having been through it. He states, "It is because I want to be loved from head to toe, justified in my every choice, that the seduction hysteria exists. And therefore I want to seem perfect so that another can love me. I want them to be perfect so that I can be reassured of my value. It leads to couples obsessed with performance who will break up, just like that, at the slightest underachievement." When he is describing this experience he explains his personal experience and how he feels towards the subject therefore giving him credibility in the manner and allowing the reader to believe what he is saying is true in some way.

  1. I agree with you, in the video "Love You're Doing It Wrong" Yann Dall'Aglio does indeed use ethos to connect with his audience. He immediately comes off as a like-able person and also funny. He also states he's married and has kids, so he already has a connection with most of his audience . He also knows what he is talking about for example talking about the show on MTV about picking up chicks and how the show treats heartache like a disease. This shows he knows what he is talking about and is quite updated on his information and experienced on the topic, so he also connects with people through ethos because he knows what he is talking about and he is very well informed on his topic.
