In Mad Max Fury Road, I believe that it rejects
nihilism because the setting takes place in a post apocalyptic world where the charters
don’t even fear death. That’s not to say that nihilism is in the movie, but the
plot and mission of the movie is to have a better way of living for everyone in
this apocalyptic life style. The whole movie showed the norm of death, harsh environments
drive or die and life is such a fast pace Max says that “whatever happens just
keep moving”, the charters have to fight to survive. Things where treasured in
the movie were, the oil, guns, and water. War is everywhere in the dessert. The
setting of the movie was a wasteland with no end. Life it self was hard to believe
in and the conman people didn’t care about morals, religion and couldn’t see a
life hope in peaceful living instead it’s a meanness lifestyle. However when Max
thinks of a plan for redemption, by saving the people them from the king and
his posy. At this turning point the change for a better way of living is the rejection
of the nihilism. So I believe that because the end of the world has came true,
the people having a belief that
life is meaningless, it cant get any worse but to continue there is no way out
but to have this shift of rebelling form the king and norm of harsh living for
a chance of hope for something good. And save everyone. So that’s why I say
that Mad Max represents the rejects of nihilism
for peaceful resolution.
I agree, Mad Mad Fury Road fully rejects nihilism. Throughout the movie, the underlying motive is survival, and survival is the opposite of nihilism. Where nihilists believe that nothing matters and so life doesn't matter, survivalists just want to live. Instead of lying about waiting to die, the lower caste of Joe's Citadel try to get enough water from the pumps to survive. If the movie was nihilist, the people would be despondent and wouldn't move an inch to drink or live. To further the emphasis on survival, the war boys were made to be nihilistic. By seeing the fanatical white powdered men try to die a good death and move on to Valhalla, the audience gets the feeling that the war boys have been brainwashed into their state of mind, and that it's pretty messed up. By having the nihilists as antagonists, Mad Max establishes survival and humanity as positive things and rejects despondency.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree as well. Although Mad Max Fury Roads incorporates Nihilism, it ultimately rejects it. The world that exists in Mad Max is definitely dystopian and has thus brought forward a large amount of Nihilistic thinking however the overall plot and message of the movie suggests that caring, believing in something, and having hope are essential in progress. The movie shows Nihilism to also show how the world may develop if nihilism were to run rampant and take over the world. With a small amount of hope and desire to better/change the world it is possible to do so. In addition to this, the forsworn reject nihilism from the beginning of the movie, the acknowledgment and desire of Valhala rejects nihilistic tendencies.
