In Mad Max Fury Road, I believe the movie rejects nihilism. Max speaks on where he lives, saying, "My world is fire and blood". This post apocalyptic world is a wasteland where it seems as if the best option would be to just give up on life. The leader of this world is Immortan Joe and he barely gives the people enough water to survive. If the population as whole were to be nihilistic then they would rather die then fight to the death for a few drops of water- but they don't. The people hold on to their seemingly sad lives and do fight for their ration of water- which is the opposite of what nihilism is. The people all fight to live, in fact at the beginning of the movie Max describes himself as, "A man reduced to one single instinct, survive". The concept of nihilism is the exact opposite of Max's statement. In a world where Max says, "Everyone has gone out of their mind", it seems like nihilism would be the key theme of this movie, but because of everyone's willingness to keep on living, (no matter how bad their world seems to be) this movie rejects nihilism.

Nihilism is the act of giving up and saying life is life. You have the care free swagger that is suited to not spend it wasting your energy about what is going to happen next. In Mad Max: Fury Road they reject this theory. It is summarized as followed, a tyrannic leader by the name of Immortan Joe is holding the people of the wasteland to scarce necessities of water and gasoline. He restricts them and tells them to not get addicted to water. He is in charge of the War Boys, which is his army, and he is in control of the so-called Breeders which are also basically his wives. They try escaping from his brutality and by this example we can see that the rejects the theme of nihilism. An argument is quoted "WHERE IS SHE TAKING THEM?!!!
ReplyDeleteShe didn't take them.
They begged her to go!
Where is she taking them?
A long way from you"!!! this exemplifies the fight in everyone to escape.
I agree with you that the movie, Mad Max: Fury Road, rejects nihilism because the character Max helps them find their hope and tells them “whatever happens just keep moving.” If the movie was with nihilism there would be no hope and Max would have never said that, rather they just sit there and wait for their unavoidable death. Also in the movie, Immortal Joe was looking for perfection and he had said his son was "perfect, perfect in every way" and this show how people are still looking for perfection which goes against nihilism.
ReplyDeleteI agree! The movie Mad Max: Fury Road does reject nihilism one example is Furiosa and the wives because they are looking for a better way to live. I believe they are searching for meaning. If it was nihilistic everyone would just give up but that is the opposite of what each character does. Nux is also an example; he always tries to please Immortal Joe to feel like he did something good in his life and at the end he dies knowing he did something important because he blocked the road so that no one else would be able to pass to stop Furiosa and the wives. These are just two examples shown throughout the movie.
